With the autumn having just begun, and winter well on its way, we’ve decided to share with you a checklist of things that need to be done to prepare for the colder months ahead. These tasks will ensure that you keep in good health and are ready for what these seasons will bring:
Seasonal Vaccines
As our immune systems tend to weaken as we age, it is of the utmost importance for those in their later years of life to partake in a yearly vaccination against illnesses such as the flu. These jabs are usually offered free to those over the age of 65, as well as to those who suffer from other problems such as asthma. This can be arranged at your local GP and should be done early on in the season for the best results.
Home Heating
A key factor in keeping up your health in the colder months is through home heating. If you or your loved ones have a central heating system, it is wise to have this serviced anytime between the late summer or early autumn to ensure that everything is in good working order for the period ahead. If there are any additional sources of heat, such as an electric heater or blanket, these too should be inspected so that you can be confident that they are safe for use and will be a cosy addition to the home all season.
Clothing and Blankets
Keeping warm at this time of year is vital to staying in good health, as the cold can weaken our bodies and leave us more susceptible to sickness. Therefore, you should ensure that there is plenty of warm clothing such as jumpers and socks, as well as blankets available throughout the season.
Indoor Activities
The cold weather can often mean that many activities you have enjoyed outdoors during spring and sumare off limits, so it’s important to be able to plan in some activities that can be done indoors. This is particularly crucial for those who live alone to ensure you keep yourself occupied in the times when you have no visitors. This could be in the form of puzzles and games, light forms of exercise or any other activity that keeps your brain sharp. Outdoor Activities
The cold weather may be a little off-putting; however, it is important to still enjoy the fresh air in the autumn and winter. Ensure that appropriate clothing is worn so that the cold is kept at bay, and try not to spend more than 30 minutes to an hour outside when the weather is particularly bitter. A stroll in the park or into the local town centre will provide a refreshing trip that gets you out of the house!
