The glorious spring season is upon us; the weather is clearing up, and there are plenty of reasons to venture outside. That’s why we have compiled a list of our top reasons to head outside this spring:
Abundant wildlife
Spring is the time of new beginnings. We say goodbye to the cruel and cold winter months and hello to a season that fills our natural world with greenery and life. Little lambs, amongst over young, can be seen in many fields around the county. Bees and butterflies make an appearance to sample on the many flowers that bloom. Migrant birds, such as swallows and swifts, make their way back to the UK woodlands to grace us with their songs. Another migrant bird includes the chiffchaffs whose name originates from the sound they make when they sing. You may even spot a hedgehog or two who make their way from their hedge homes to enjoy the start of good weather. Arguably, spotting some of the wildlife that makes up our woodlands and fields is one of the best reasons to head outside this spring.
Better weather
The weather in Devon over winter can be temperamental at the best of times. It rains, a lot, and the grey skies never seem to disperse! It is only when spring arrives, in late March, that the weather begins to improve and we can make the most of the stunning scenery in our county. We usually experience less rainfall during spring, so it is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy this season in all its glory.
Improved health
Many reports and scientific studies have connected being outside with improved health and happiness. Venturing outside, even if is for a short while, can help alleviate our moods and improve our well-being and physical health. The sun also provides us with a much-needed source of Vitamin D that helps our bodies to fight off diseases, promoting a healthy immune system function. Vitamin D can also help tackle feelings of depression, as well as help aid weight loss. It is important that you make the most of the sunny days in Devon and get outside when you can.
Beautiful flowers
Beautiful flowers spring up during this season, including the renowned daffodils that line the flower beds of nearby roads, lawns and meadows. Other flowers that bloom during this season include bluebells that can be found in the borders and hedgerows, as well as the lily-of-the-valley which are scented delicate white flowers. Why not make the most of the beautiful weather and spruce up your garden with some potted plants? Plants that are easy to maintain and look after will be ideal options for you. We recommend looking to purchase some primroses, these sweet little yellow flowers, with textured leaves, are particularly easy to grow and maintain, plus they will add a touch of colour to any garden!
If you need some inspiration to add a bit of vibrancy to your lawn, head to a local garden centre or National Trust site that are wheelchair-friendly. The staff at these organisations will be able to advise you about the best flowers for you.
These are just four of the best reasons to get outside during spring; there are plenty more. If you’ve been cooped up at home for most of the winter, rejoice in the fact that spring is now bringing us better weather and a multitude of reasons to go outside. If you want to get outside this spring, it may be time to update your old wheelchair to one of our all terrain mobility scooters so that you can explore the great British outdoors without limitations!
